Hey Friend, Do Some Yoga

By Libby Blumberg

yoga quoteIt is so easy for a woman to neglect herself. After all, she often is in charge of keeping others alive and well and juggling several tasks at once. But as the saying goes, ‘If mama ain’t happy, nobody’s happy!’ One of the many ways to cultivate some happiness is to do yoga. Here are some tips to get yoga into your life without a whole lot of effort:

  • Begin by dismissing the myth that yoga is hard. It is not. Anyone can do yoga. The photos often used to portray yoga are usually of advanced yoga practitioners and represent a small percentage of the types/styles available.
  • When researching a yoga class, look for key words like, gentle, restorative, slow, beginner, meditative, mindful, relax, release, stretch, basic, and healing. These key words will lead you to an experience perfect for a woman who works hard all day, every day.
  • Child care doesn’t have to be a deal breaker. There are yoga classes held at gyms which offer free or low cost childcare. But if that isn’t an option, start a child care community with other moms. Find a group of five moms who want to attend a yoga class and take turns caring for your little ones.
  • Do yoga at home before the kids rise in the morning, while they nap, or any other time they will give you a few minutes to yourself. Even if it is just 10 minutes of stretching, breathing, and centering, it will rejuvenate and restore you.
  • And finally, realize that yoga is not only about the postures. Yoga can be lived every day by the way we think, speak, and behave. Do your best to be clear minded. Speak with kind words. Act with love in your heart.

Yoga can change your life. It changed mine. Start by making baby steps toward a healthier and happier you. Before you know it, yoga will change your life too.

Libby began her yoga journey in 2006 at Ocean Yoga Center under the instruction of Kate Cordell and Paula Coughlin. After receiving her BA in Dance from UNC Charlotte and a 25 year career in dance education, the transition to yoga was natural, yet she has learned a great deal about living a life of yoga that goes beyond the Asanas. The OYC community fully embraced Libby and inspired her to obtain yoga teacher certification in the spring of 2015. She trained with Joan and Jim Ryan of Radiant Wellness Yoga Therapy and is now an Integrative Yoga Therapy Instructor. She teaches a gentle, modified, and meditative practice. Libby is also trained to do one on one instruction with people who desire to live a more full and joyful life.

Libby lives in Nocatee with her husband, Jeff, and daughter, Emma. She loves the family atmosphere and looks forward to raising Emma with lots of friends, great schools, and a supportive community. Libby is a One2One Network member and a blogger. On her site, Creative Blog Mom, she writes about her life & family, fun things she does with her daughter, favorite products, and of course, yoga!
