Featured O2O Member: Melissa Northway

Featured-O2O-Member-MelissaNorthwayOur featured member this week is full of life, creativity, and inspiration and we’ve so enjoyed getting to know her better! Melissa Northway has been a joy to work with and we’re so pleased to have her as a network member. We recently caught up with her to find out more about her life: the writing, the blogging, and a little bit of what goes on away from the computer keyboard.

Hello! My name is Melissa and I love creating! I was inspired to write children’s picture books after my daughter was born several years ago. I joined the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) to find out how to make my dream of publishing a children’s picture book come true. The journey was long and tons of work, but in January 2011, my first storybook app, Penelope the Purple Pirate, was released through my company Polka Dots Publishing (yes, I started a publishing company to make it happen) and PicPocket Books. It is also available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and I am currently working on my fourth children’s book. I am a big proponent of carving your own path and going after your dreams!

I created the lifestyle website, dandelion moms, so that we can share our journeys and inspire each other to live the life we’ve always dreamed of.

Favorite O2O Projects you’ve worked on:

I think my favorite O2O project is the one I am working on right now with Calphalon cookware! Our family is making a real effort to cook more meals at home and it is exciting that we have new cookware to do it with! My daughter and I even plan on taking some cooking classes together and I look forward to creating some delicious meals with the new cookware!

Favorite part of being an O2O Member:

The O2O community feels very close-knit and I am excited to be a part of this wonderful group of women and men. Everyone has been very easy to work with!

Tell us how you came to be a blogger.

Dandelion Moms was created in August 2012 with the hope of creating a platform for women to share their stories, challenges, hopes and dreams. We feature inspirational individuals and organizations giving back to their community as well as provide parenting, health, beauty, and travel tips. I chose the name dandelion moms because much like the seeds of a dandelion traveling in the air, we can never know how acts of kindness might spread. Our essence is about doing our best, being our best and spreading seeds of kindness out into the world.

Name another blogger you admire and why.

There are so many bloggers that I admire! I do love the kind words and sweetness of Heather Delany Reese of It’s a Lovely Life and Rachel of Hands Free Mama. Both women encourage me to stay balanced and remember what is important and try to be the best version of me.

Is there a piece of advice, quote, or mantra that you live by?

One of my favorite quotes is by Henry David Thoreau:

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Life the life you’ve imagined.”

I think sometimes as mothers we push aside our dreams but I hope to encourage women to remember that keeping these dreams alive are good for the spirit! It might take some time to achieve them, but to hold on to them – whatever they might be and move forward with them.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

I do appreciate when friends of mine say that they find me inspirational. That is such a nice compliment and it touches my heart.

But the one compliment that I always will remember and hope to stay true to is one a sorority sister gave me back in college. We were in a circle and asked to give a compliment to the person next to you, My friend turned to me she said that I was “real.” I love that and try to stay true to myself and not worry about being anyone else but me – being oneself is enough.

What was your last best meal?

Oh! I love food! Well, I should say I love good food! Since we had some fun birthday celebrations this past month I would say the linguini and clam sauce pasta dish was delicious!

Is there a song you can’t get enough of, listen to on repeat, know all the lyrics, obsessed with?

I love “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac – but it makes me cry everytime!

What is the best thing to do where you live?

We live in Orange County so there is so much to do here! We tend to go to the beach quite a bit and recently headed up to Mountain High for some skiing. There are a ton of wonderful nature hikes around our area and we do this quite a bit with our family. I feel fortunate to live where we live though I could do without the traffic!

Night owl or early bird?

Early bird

What is your favorite time of the year?

Fall/Winter! I love everything about it – from the holidays, food and clothing!

Three things you can’t live without (besides family/friends/faith):

  • Coffee (sad but true)
  • Chocolate (not sad but true!)
  • Music
