featured-o2o-member-angiebarrettAngie Barrett is the blogger behind Big Bear’s Wife where she shares her family’s favorite recipes, tales of her travel from here to there, and tries to embrace her crafty side! She lives on the VA/NC state line with her husband, BigBear, and their two dogs. Angie loves the Farmer’s Market and Farm to Table meals but she’s also not ashamed to use canned vegetables and baking mixes in the kitchen. As she says, “It’s all about balance!”

Tell us how you came to be a blogger.

When we got married I started to teach myself to cook because I didn’t want to live off of boxed food, take out and frozen pizza. I also wanted my husband to eat something other than “steak and potato”, that’s all he ever wanted to eat. I’m proud to say that he now eats broccoli and steamed spinach; I never thought that would happen.

I started my blog back in 2009, as a way to save the recipes that I loved to make. By January 2009, we had only been married for 2 years and we were already living in our 2nd house. We were getting ready to move again, this time back home to Virginia because Big Bear (that would be my husband) was getting out of the military. I had been writing recipes down in a notebook and had dozens of recipes that were printed out and stuffed into a folder. Needless to say they were a mess and every time I packed up boxes to move houses, I seemed to lose half of them. One night while watching the Food Network, I learned about a food blog called “Peanut Butter and Julie” and immediately went to my computer and looked it up. I fell in love with the blog and knew that I wanted to start one to keep all of my recipes in one place! Originally I thought I’d use it just as a online “searchable” place to keep them and it has turned into so much more.

Name another blogger you admire and why.

Amanda from Amanda’s Cookin’. She took me under her wing and taught me so much about the Food Blogging word. From photography tips, to cooking tips, to PR tips, she’s taught me a ton! I am so glad that I can call her my friend. I don’t know where I’d be without her!
