Marketing Tips for Influencers: Stand Out From the Crowd

Would it surprise you to know that a tip given to brands seeking to work with online influencers is, “stand out from the crowd“? Brands want to be noticed, too! Take this article from Business.com, “How to win over social media influencers“, on how brands can find influencers to work with. The advice given is threefold: find the right influencers that fit naturally with your brand, engage with them on social media, and reach out by leaving relevant and insightful comments on their site. Sounds like a good plan, right? And one that can be used by influencers in reverse.

Let’s break this out shall we?

Find the right influencer (or your case, the right brand)

I love this quote from Helene Sula of Helene in Between in her article, “How to Manage, Track, and Make Money Sponsors“-

“think about what you care about. What are products, services, entertainment, etc that you already use. I keep a running list of things I like. Let me give you an example. I love Pura Vida bracelets. I happen to also think they work well with my Instagram feed. I decided I’d reach out to see if they wanted to partner with me. I wasn’t in it to make tons of money, I just sincerely liked their product. The next day, they sent me 10 bracelets and an affiliate code to use.”

You don’t stand out from the crowd by working with just anyone. You stand out by being selective and working with brands that fit your niche, your lifestyle, your brand.

Another way to find the right brands? Influencer networks, like ours! Our team spends a lot of time matching up influencers with brands. We research, research, research, and then research some more to be sure that when we pitch an influencer to participate in a brand sponsored program, the brand/blogger pairing is a fit on both sides.

Connecting on social media

By far this seems to be the most popular way that influencers are connecting with brands (and vice versa!) because it’s so simple and accessible.

Becca Robins, blogger at Love Our Crazy Life says, “Tagging brands in posts on Instagram and twitter, showing you love their product before contacting them is a great way. Also reaching out via twitter DM, etc when you want to form a relationship. … once you work with a brand, continue promoting the post, thank the brand again for working with you, and just let them know you would love to work with them again in the future.”

If you love the feeling of being responded to or tagged by a brand on social media, know that brands often feel the same way when influencers engage with them.

Commenting on sites

This one may be trickier for an influencer reaching out to a brand as not all brands have blogs or ways to comment on their sites. You can reach out to those who handle marketing decisions or if you know which PR agency handles the brand’s online marketing activations, initiate contact with them via email. Be sure to have a plan, attach a media kit with recent stats, include examples of how you’ve used their product in your life, and be direct with how you’d like to work with them. As Linda Kuzior, Director of Operations at Redex Industries Incorporated says, “when you do email a pitch, be genuine and clearly state what you are interested in doing with the brand.”

Brands want to work with you and you want to work with them; you’re both trying to stand out from the crowd and find each other. So just like the takeaway at the end of the referenced article, the takeaway here is the same: Build relationships first. Reach out to brands with an expectation of forming a relationship, not with an expectation of getting something from them. The same way you can spot a brand trying to captilize on your hard work by leveraging your influence without offering you anything in return, brands can spot someone who’s only interested using them for a freebie or a quick buck.

Aristotle taught us, “Character may almost be called the most effective means of persuasion.” More than anything, you’ll stand out from everyone else by being genuine and sincere.

  1. These are great tips. I love the idea of approaching companies who make products you already love. Also, great idea on mentioning them in tweets, etc. prior to contacting them. When I pitch companies, I always do frame the conversation around ways our partnership can benefit THEM. Every company wants to sell things — I can help!

    I interacted with them a lot on social media, showing them that I truly DID love their product, before I pitched them.
